Working with the Media
Future Health is committed to transparency and actively encourages journalistic coverage of public health issues in Burundi and the wider Great Lakes region. We believe that responsible, nuanced reporting is essential for holding governments accountable, mobilizing international resources, and educating the public on global health disparities.
Our media relations team is available to facilitate interviews with our executive leadership, clinical directors, and epidemiological researchers. We can also provide background briefings on regional health trends, disease outbreaks, and the economics of rural healthcare delivery.
Media Guidelines & Patient Privacy
While we welcome media coverage, the dignity, privacy, and safety of our patients remain our absolute highest priority. All journalists and media personnel visiting Future Health facilities or accompanying our mobile clinics must strictly adhere to the following guidelines:
- Informed Consent: Explicit, informed consent must be obtained from any patient (or their legal guardian) before they are interviewed, photographed, or filmed. Consent can be withdrawn at any time.
- Anonymity: Patient names and identifiable geographic details must be altered or omitted upon request, particularly concerning sensitive cases (e.g., gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS).
- No Disruption to Care: Media presence must never interfere with clinical operations, triage, or the provision of emergency care.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Reporting must avoid harmful tropes, poverty tourism, or narratives that strip agency from the local community.
Our communications officers will accompany visiting media personnel at all times to ensure these guidelines are followed and to provide necessary translation services (Kirundi/French/English).
